What I Listen To

fav-podcasts1

Today I thought I'd share some of what I listen to while I'm working. Usually I listen to music in the idea/thinking phase but once I get going I like to listen to a book on tape or a podcast (especially if I have to do a lot of finishing work computer). Here are some of my favorite podcasts:

RADIOLAB: I love Radiolab. I think everyone does at this point? It's a beautiful mixture "between  philosophy, and human experience", which is my favorite way to experience science.

99% INVISIBLE: I learned about this show from Radiolab and it's my new favorite! It's about design that's all around us but that we hardly ever notice, the "99% invisible activity that shapes our world." If I were you I'd go back and listen to all the episodes, they're very short and completely fascinating.

DECODE DC: Andrea Seabrook used to cover congress for NPR, but she's had enough! Decode DC is her attempt to cover what's actually happen in politics and not just repeating soundbites. If you are also fed up with politics and how it's covered you will like this.

FREAKONOMICS: For some reason this one took me a while to get into. But after listening to about twelve straight hours of it while hand addressing wedding envelopes a few months back I was hooked! Their tagline is "the hidden side of everything", I would say it's kind of a non emotional way of looking at everyday things in a new way. Give it a listen and maybe that will make sense!

THE DINNER PARTY: This one was recommended to me by a couple of people. So far I've only listed to a few episodes but it's a lot of fun! It's sort of like a pretend dinner party, they invite famous people on to chat about current events, create dinner party mixes, or teach you a joke or how to mix a cocktail to serve at your own dinner party. It's another short but sweet one.

As well as these I listen to the podcast downloads of Fresh Air, The Diane Rehm Show, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, The Splendid Table, and Snap Judgment. I have to say, I'm just not into This American Life anymore, I haven't listened to to willingly in years. NPR sacrilege I know but there you go.

A lot of you might already listen to these, but maybe you'll find something good to get though your day or a long car trip!

What are some of your favorite podcasts? I love recommendations, especially if they're lesser known shows!

  1. Thank you for the suggestions! I listen to a lot of Pandora music while I work, but I also love listening to "On Being" onbeing.org its usually hopeful and inspiring. And I admit...when i start working on Christmas and winter art, months before winter, I listen to a lot of Christmas music, especially the soothing carol type music.

  2. Oooh! Thanks for this! I just downloaded 99% invisible and I'm totally excited to have a listen. Lately, I've turned to podcasts for my daily commute, they seem to keep me sane and relatively road rage free.

  3. How funny that you created this post today. I just asked my husband the other day if we could start listening to some podcasts on our long commute to work. So, thanks for the suggestions. Yesterday we listened to some history podcast called Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. I like history. =)

  7. Thanks so much for sharing these! I'm always searching for new podcasts. I often visit the CBC for podcasts, http://www.cbc.ca/podcasting/ a few of my favorites are DNTO, The Next Chapter, Vinyl Cafe Stories, Quirks and Quarks and Ideas. Here is a great 3 part podcast on the history of colour http://www.cbc.ca/ideas/episodes/2011/11/21/the-power-of-colour-part-1-2-3/

  9. Thanks for a few new ones - blown away you don't like TAL any more. Sometimes think I'm gonna hate an episode, but they always deliver. Love the CBC podcast suggestion in the comments + I highly suggest that anyone who likes 99% Invisible invest a few minutes in the short podcast, The Memory Palace, which explores the true story behind those things we think we all know.

Totally not in the same reign, but I listen to The Nerdist, Marc Maron and SMODcast on heavy rotation during running season - sometimes inappropriate, but always entertaining. I know I look like an idiot laughing out loud on the track, but it def makes time fly by on long run days.

Since posting this I started listening to the Spilled Milk podcast (www.spilledmilkpodcast.com) so I highly recommend that one now too. It had me laughing so hard almost messed up the lettering that I was working on.
