Makeup

Makeup Collection
Can we talk about makeup for a minute? I'm into it.
It's weird because I never really was until about two years ago, when I hit 29. That's when I started getting more concerned about taking care of my skin, and along the way I got to appreciate makeup as well. Before it always seemed like a lot of trouble to go through, but putting on makeup is one of my favorite parts of the day, I find it soothing and just nice.

I also get probably a little over excited about researching and trying out new products, it's better than Christmas! These photos are some of my favorite/essential products and tools of the moment, things that I wear every day.

Also, I have to say I've learned so much from watching YouTube tutorials (how ever did people learn to put on cat eye eyeliner before YouTube?), and product reviews. And I'm not doing anything fancy at all, I love just watching how other wormen do their makeup every day. One of my favorite beauty YouTubers right now is this girl, I especially like that she uses and reviews a mixture of fancy and drugstore products, plus she's hilarious.

I'm kind of addicted to YouTube beauty channels in general. Do you have any favorite channels to share? Do you have any specific products you're really excited about right now?

In case you're curious the things pictured are: eyelash curler by Tarte (the best I've ever used!), Stilla eyeshadow in "kitten", Fresh sugar lip treatment SPF 15 in "honey" and "rose", Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in "natural beauty", the Real Techniques Blush Brush, a cheap Sephora blush brush that I use for highlighter, BeneFit They're Real! mascara (amazing!), Stila "Stay All Day" Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in "jet black", L'Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Skin Beautifier B.B. Cream in "fair" (thanks to Tristan for that recommendation!), Scotch Naturals nail polish in "paisley martini", Pacifica Lip Quench in "coconut pearls", Tarte EmphasEyes brow pencil in "medium brown".

  1. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's addicted to youtube beauty channels and makeup! Sometimes I feel like we artists get to caught up on showing ourselves as artists that we fail to share what else we're into.

My favorite channels have to be Lisa Eldridge's channel and another beauty girl because her hair is curly like mine, and I love seeing what she does with it (I totally fail at the curly haired styling thing). Essie button is also another one I love <3

As for products...I'm going to say, absolutely in love with Tarte's Exposed and Nars' Torrid blushes, my foundation is always shiseido because it's the only one that doesn't freak my skin out. And eyeshadow wise, I've been on a total Urban Decay kick (toasted and stray dog have become my go to's for work).

    1. I still haven't tried any urban decay eyeshadows yet! I really wanted to try one of the naked palettes, but I haven't been able to decide which one, so I'm just going to have to wait until I can make up my mind!

  2. This is exactly what happened to me. Didn't care too much other than a bit of mascara to hide my ginger face, then BOOM 29 and I'm all about the fancy make up. I actually LOVE buying it. And I have that exact eye shadow!

    1. I feel bad for all wasted years without the joy of buying highlighter;/ Oh well, making up for lost time now!
I love that eyeshadow so much!

  3. Yes, me too, I wasn't into make up (because of the effort involved) until I was in my early 30s. Now I usually don't leave the house without at least tinted moisturizer and tinted lip balm on. I want to try that mascara--it's so hard to find a really good one! Currently I'm using Zuzu Luxe which is pretty good: can be washed off with regular soap but doesn't cause raccoon eyes.

Thanks for the recs! I'm going to check out that YouTube channel. :)

    1. I would definitely recommend the Benefit mascara, it really stays put and makes my lashes look amazing. I have heard some people don't like the brush because it's got kind of wide bristles, but it works for me!

  6. I love posts like this! I've been meaning to put together a post about my favorites. I've always loved beauty products but it wasn't until last year when I was getting married that I finally started making investments into products.

I adore Essie's blog. Do you follow Lisa Eldridge?

Some recent beauty products I've been excited about right now are from Nuxe. Their lip balm and spray are heavenly.

  7. I am way too old, but I wanted to try out a liquid eye liner. I got the chance to go to a Canadian Duty Free shop so thought I would check out what was available and the cute young lady took me right over to her favorite. A fine felt pen or a brush with about 5 hairs. I chose the hairs.

Taking off my glasses and closing one eye to apply the noire line made me realize that I needed some makeup remover.....quick! Thanks for your recommendations for help. Good timing!

  8. Hello Julianna!

I'm interested in makeup as well, and also didn't get into it(meaning didn't spend as much money on it) until my 20's. I spend far too much time watching make-up tutorials on Youtube. I even listen to them while I paint sometimes. My favorites are Lisa Eldridge, Lip So Facto, and of course Essiebutton. I also love beauty blogs. This one is beautiful- http://www.thedauphine.com.
My favorite products are Nars lipsticks, Dior eyeshadows, Cargo blushes, and Mario Badescu Skincare.
I've been following your work for a long time and it's nice to know there's another illustrator out there who's interested in beauty and skincare.
    All the best,
    Becca

    1. Hello Becca!
Oh my goodness yes, I've been spending an embarrassing amount of time watching make-up tutorials lately. I put them on when I'm working sometimes as well!
That beauty blog is so wonderful, thanks for sharing!
I'm really interested in trying some Mario Badescu products. I was using Origins, and recently I've started using Kiehls, with mixed results. Maybe I'll have to do another post like this about skin care at some point!
